TANGO was founded
in 1986 initiated with 7 founding members with the aim of assisting NGO
communities to access information and attracting potential resources into
the country. TANGO operated on a purely voluntary basis and its office
was based within the premises of the Tuvalu National Red Cross for the
first 11 of its existence. In 1987, TANGO's constitution was developed and
approved and in year 2000 TANGO came-up with its Strategic Plan
2001-2004 (Our Way Forward strategy).
For the period 1986 to 1998 TANGO received sporadic financial assistance
from Commonwealth Foundation, Pacific Concerns Resource Center (PCRC), NZODA, AusAID, Australian
Foundation For Asia and the Pacific (AFAP), FSPI and the Government of
Tuvalu, among others. This funding enabled TANGO to employ a coordinator, rent
an office space, purchase office equipment as well as support TANGO's
programmes and projects on disaster preparedness, small scale gardening
projects, sexual health trainings and attendance to overseas meetings. In
2002, TANGO received a block funding from the European Union and VSO to
implement the 4-year project on Pacific Skills-Link, an NGO Capacity
Building Project.
As of December 2002, TANGO has registered 31 NGO (including CBOs) members
all over the country.
