A Brief History

In 1968, FSP opened it's office in Sydney, Australia to co-ordinate programmes in the Pacific region. This office grew into the first FSP developed independent affiliate and is today known as The Australian Foundation of the Peoples of Asia and the Pacific, one of the leading non-government organizations of Australia, working in some 20 nations of Asia, the Pacific and now Africa.

Through a series of meetings in the Kingdom of Tonga (1984) and Solomon Islands (1986) and Fiji (1990), FSP/USA then brought together its partner non-government organizations (NGO) into FSPI.

Description

AFAP works to assist the peoples of Asia, the Pacific and Africa by supporting projects that are environmentally and economically sustainable, gender balanced and supportive of the integrity and self-determination of local communities.

Based in Sydney, AFAP plays a vital role for the FSPI network. It has supported the FSPI network's programmes in the Pacific, acting as a catalyst and co-ordinator for many of the projects funded by Australian donors. AFAP promotes sustainable, self-reliant community development projects in the areas of institution building, health, education, literacy, agriculture, environmental protection, hospital rehabilitation, village improvement, disaster relief and rehabilitation and small industry development which emerge from the aspirations of the local people.

Within Australia, AFAP aims to raise public awareness of the current situation in the countries of the Pacific, Asia and Africa. AFAP is a membership organisation, which provides opportunities for Australians who wish to volunteer their services in support of our overseas development programmes. AFAP members from many professions volunteer their services by providing technical expertise, assistance with project implementation and with fundraising and membership.

AFAP has a Medical Supplies and Services (MSS) Program which provides hospital equipment and medical supplies to hospitals and health centres in Asia, South Pacific and Africa.
