COUNTERPART
A Brief History
The idea of starting a Foundation grew out of the friendship of
Elizabeth and Bryant Silverstein with an Australian Marist Missionary
priest, Stanley Hosie. On behalf of the Marist Society, Hosie had done an
extensive field study of its Pacific Islands missions in Melanesia and
Polynesia in early 1963.
Counterpart International fomerly known as The Foundation for the Peoples
of the South Pacific (FSP), was a niche organisation which focussed on the
island nations of the Pacific Basin - Oceania. It supported programs of
the local partners it had helped to create among the Melanesians,
Polynesian and Micronesian island peoples.
The name change legally came into effect ten years ago. Ten years later,
Counterpart International Inc, accommodates its meteoric expansion to over
sixty nations of Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and especially
former Soviet Union.

Future Direction
Perhaps Counterpart's future direction
is aptly described by its CEO, Mr Lelei Lelaulu in that, "Counterpart
is being driven by its history into a growing role on the world stage,
a catalytic activist role in partnership with intergovernmental agencies,
with international business and with other non-governmental organisations
to facilitate a more efficient use of the available resources of the
First World to meet the needs of the Third World."
