FSP Fiji was born in 1978 and nurtured by
FSP USA as part of its local institutional building programme in the South
Pacific. It has since been 100% self-supporting through its networking
connection to the donor community in Australia and Europe.
Coincidentally, PCDF's (formerly FSP Fiji) current Coral Gardens Project
maintains our umbilical cord to our past. Makogai Island as mentioned
above, served as a leper colony for most of the islands in the Pacific
Region including New Zealand. The Marist community, of which Fr. Stan Hosie is
a member, assisted Fiji's Health system and other supporters, by serving
in Makogai Island in the early 1900s till late 1960s for the treatment of
leprosy. At present, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PCDF and
the Fiji Government's Fisheries Department exists for research and
training work in marine resources on Makogai Island.
