What is OLSSI?:
- Founded in 1990, it is the first environment non-Government agency
in Samoa.
- OLSSI has a membership of more than fifty financial members including
international & local residents. It has secured access from
most village communities in Samoa with unique and intact terrestrial
& marine biodiversity resources.
- OLSSI is managed by an elected Board of Directors, a President
and six board members
- A fulltime Executive Director, Programme Coordinator & Office
Manager carry out the day to day running of the Office.
- Hundred percent of its work is tailored towards accommodating
the needs and benefit for all the residents of Samoa particularly
the Village Communities on issues related to the environment &
cultural heritage protection.
- OLSSI is a not for profit organization.
- OLSSI specializes in mentoring village communities to sustainably
manage their natural resources.

Work of OLSSI
- Dedicated to Advocacy, village community awareness raising, village
communities capacity building, appropriate technology transfer for
sustainable development activities,
- Promoting community based & village participatory approach,
Work Closely with the Samoan Government Ministries like the Agricultural,
Forest, Fisheries & Meteorology (MAFFM), the Department of Lands,
Survey & Environment as well as the National Council of Churches
on Issues pertaining to the Future of the Environment in Samoa.
- Pushes to conduct environment impact assessment for any major
development projects that affects health of the environment e.g.
Major Hydro Electric Power projects, Town developments, Land reclamation
etc. by the Government
- Environment Education & Awareness for all the sectors of the
Samoan Community
Coordinate & Undertake Advocacy programmes on:
- Sustainable development issues promoted in the UNCED and WSSD
process,
- Waste management,
- Water conservation,
- Forestry conservation,
- Biodiversity conservation, international waters,
- Ozone depletion substances,
- Persistent organic pollutants,
- Renewable energy,
- Climate change,
- Sustainable tourism,
- Marine - terrestrial Flora & Fauna & protection,
- Community forestry,
- Avifauna protection,
- Promoting indigenous & traditional knowledge
- Herbal & Traditional medicine
Propose, assist, implement coordinate & monitor long term environmentally
sound practical projects with the village communities like:
- Rainforest Protection & Sustainably managed forests
- Watershed Management
- Coastal Protection
- Nuclear-free Pacific
- Protection of endangered species (flora &
fauna/avifauna – Marine + Terrestrial)
- Reef protection
- Waste management
- Human Sustainable Development
- Climate Change
- Good Governance
- Eco-Tourism
- Inbound study tours
