Description Constituted in 1998 and a member of FSPI
since 2000, Timor Aid is is one of the largest East Timorese NGOs whose
roots go back many years to the period of struggle for the right of
self-determination of the people of East Timor. Timor Aid has among its
founders local personalities who were involved directly or indirectly in
the long history of the struggle of East Timorese. Timor Aid had a
significant, and much praised, involvement in the emergency humanitarian
response that followed the events of September 1999.a non-government aid organization (NGO) founded
by East Timorese, whose seat is in Dili.
It provided relief,
reconstruction and development aid to the people of East Timor. Timor Aid
now engages in long-term development projects mainly in the areas of
health, education, capacity building, the advancement of women, and income
generation. Nobel Peace Laureate Dr José Ramos Horta is the Honorary
Chairman and a patron to Timor Aid.
In addition to assistance obtained through its well-developed
international network of relations, the organization also implemented
distribution, reconstruction and maintenance programs funded by bodies
such as UNHCR, DFID, UNICEF, WFP and others.
Currently Timor Aid is implementing medium and long-term projects in Dili
and in the districts of Manufahi, Covalima, Viqueque and Oe-cussi.
Timor Aid gave training to East Timorese women on Counseling
and therapy for victims of torture and trauma, health education on
disease prevention, ante and post-natal care for village women.
