Mission/Vision The founding members of Timor Aid
have a vision of a peaceful new independent state of East Timor,
whose people are able to live with dignity and prosperity, in harmony with
each other, the environment, and their regional neighbors. Timor Aid has
been created to contribute to the implementation of this vision.
Timor Aid's mission has been, on the one hand, to provide aid for
the emergency and reconstruction needs of the territory, to identify
longer-term needs in East Timor, and to develop and implement suitable
programs to satisfy these needs.
A major factor to achieve development is the transfer of human,
intellectual, and material resources from suitably endowed countries to
East Timor. Timor Aid is playing a significant role in this respect
through its programs. These programs have a particular focus on the
empowerment of women in this new country.
The STATOIL sponsorship, enabled 223 East Timorese students to return to
their previous Universities in Indonesia to finalize their tertiary
education which was interrupted during the events leading up to the
Referendum in 1999.
The José Ramos Horta Micro Credit Facility for the Poor started in
early September 2000, providing small loans for a number of small
entrepreneurs from East
Timor.
