The
Solomon Islands Coral Gardens Initiative seeks to provide
support and expertise to help communities conserve, manage
and restore their coral reef resources in the Solomon Islands.
The project commenced in November 2002 and is to be completed
by March 2005.
This project is based on work carried out in Fiji by FSPI’s
national affiliate Partners in Community Development Fiji
(PCDF) and supports community based management processes
in Malaita Province (Langa Langa), Guada Canal Province
(Marau), and Central Province (Ngella).

In
Marau and Ngella, communities have developed community based
management plans, established no fishing areas, and initial
baseline monitoring of the ecosystem has been completed.
The next steps for these sites will be facilitating the
development of a monitoring and evaluation strategy by the
community for their management plan and further implementation
of other activities highlighted in the plans. Initial workshops
have been held In Langa Langa Lagoon.
