The
objective of the project is to evaluate the feasibility
and socio-economic costs and benefits of culturing corals
and live rock for decision makers to consider as an alternative
to wild harvest and as a possible basis for community development.
It is being implemented jointly by FSPI and the Marine Aquarium
Council and is expected to be completed in January 2005.
The
Fiji study aims to be a comprehensive national scale assessment
that will assist the Fiji Government to comply
with CITES requirements for non-detriment finding in relation
to levels of coral harvesting. The Solomon Islands component
will be more contained and comprise a pilot study of one
or more sites to provide guidance to other sites.
The
project is being implemented jointly by FSPI and the Marine
Aquarium Council and funding is provided by SPREP.
