Awareness and Education

This component of the project aims to raise awareness on mental health among communities, policy makers and the private sectors.

Activities

Phase 1

A working group composed of mental health experts such as psychologists, academics, psychiatrists, counselors and community workers got together to prepare a "Mental Health Resource Kit" which will be used as an educational tool for the participating communities, and later for the region.

The Kit will be pre-tested and hopefully published by the beginning of 2006.

The Kit will cover the following areas.

  • Stress

  • Mental Health

  • Resources for Mental Health

  • Mental Illness

  • Recognizing Mental Illness

  • What do you do if you think someone is stressed and mentally ill?

  • case studies

The "Mental Health Resource Kit" is written and composed taking into consideration the lifestyles and cultural practices within the Pacific Region and is currently being sent out to mental health professionals through the region for comments and updates/additions.

It is designed to be user-friendly and flexible for the trainer and resource poor stakeholders.

Phase 2

The Resource Kit will then be used during workshops to be carried out with youth groups, communities, politicians  and the private sector.
