This Project responds to FSPI staff concerns about the level of recyclable waste that FSPI discards. In an effort to become an environmentally-friendlyorganisation, staff have suggested a number of recycling projects for office waste, including composting and paper-making. In addition, FSPI seeks to involve marginalized community members of Suva, such as street youth, to take part in recycling activities in order to impart new skills, build civic awareness and responsibility, offer avenues for community participation, provide financial income, and raise levels of self esteem.

The project, partly funded by Pacific Conservation and Development Trust, New Zealand, started in early 2003 and currently is being carried out by the primary students of the International School of Suva and Chevalier Hostel who houses disadvantaged boys.

The waste management component of this project (composting) is being implemented by the International School who are also taught to sort out waste paper for reuse and recycle. Chevalier Hostel will provide training in waste-based art for the street youth from throughout Suva.

Some of the activities will include:

  1. capacity building of Suva street youth in "waste-based" art
  2. Marketing of youth waste-based art at various venues
  3. Raising awareness in Fiji about recycling and proper waste management
  4. Raising awareness in Fiji about young peoples issues and opportunities for youth empowerment
